I positioned myself in the most dangerous location in this 110+mph turn, thinking things would be cool during warmup (Salazar crashed hard only 2 turns up the track - so much for any spot being 'safe' during warmup). But the light and view were perfect that morning. The woods at Elkhart Lake left an opening to let the sun hit the cars from right behind me, while I was still in the shade (it was hot!). When I set up the big lens I had hauled for over 1.5 miles to this location - the track officials were so impressed that they didn't tell me to leave that area ("I guess you guys are professionals and know what you're doing" - I am still laughing at that comment...). I was so worried about freezing the cars in their fast motion, that I didn't stop down the lens - I shot wide open at f4.0 - but even at 50 yards distance, the depth of field of that big lens is maybe 3 feet... Next time I'd stop down one or two f-stops, jus to get the car noce to tail in focus. The AF always seemed to lock onto the rear wing, too, which didn't help at all...
