The John Muir Trail 2009

11-year-old hikers in the Sierra

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How old was the youngest John Muir Trail yo-yo hiker so far?
A: To the best of our knowledge, 19.

Q: Is your hike "self supported"?
A: Yes, we will carry all our food, all our gear. Few items are shared

Q: Will you walk the exact John Muir Trail route or deviate from it?
A: For the sake of variation, we will use several alternate routes to make the trip more interesting. Our route will actually become longer and more difficult because of these changes. If that disqualifies the "record" then so be it.

Q: How far are you hiking?
A: We estimate 444 miles (710 kilometers), and over 70,000 vertical feet (21300 meters) to ascend. From our 2008 GPS data we expect the number to actually be larger, as most maps seem to underestimate distances compared to exact GPS data.

Q: How fast do you hike?
A: In 2008, we usually averaged 2-2.5 miles per hour, and never moved for more than 7 hours per day. We need to average 12.5 miles per day to complete our schedule.
