Here you can see (fuzzy) the black 1" markings already transferred to the rope, while I am measuring the silver wire for the first run. You will need about 10-15% extra length to have enough for the helical wrap around the core. With the uninsulated silver, waste isn't such an issue (it's cheap compared to the teflon wires I used in the past), so go give it a few inches extra, since you don't want to repeat this after it turns out you cut the wire a few inches too short.

You do want the wire cut from the spool, though - it's very difficult to wrap it around the core while the spool is attached to the end of the wire you are working with. The smaller the gauge, the more careful you need to be with the wire as you twist it around the core to avoid that it gets knotted or twisted. Take your time here, since you won't be able to get in there later to fix things.
